This year's summer vacation was a wonderful camping road trip that included a lot of outdoor activities. We enjoyed some really great hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and river paddling, but also spent a good deal of time just hanging out with really good friends and playing with the kids.

Our trip began by driving the scenic route from our home in Henderson, Nevada, along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains to Lake Tahoe where our good friends Jim and Mari Germain have a cabin near the lake. From there we made a short days drive to Lassen National Park for an overnight on our way to our good friends Michael and Nadya Novak who live in Weaverville, California. We spent five days with the Novak's having an awesome time biking, climbing, rafting, and playing in the creek that runs through their backyard. From there we went back to beautiful, uncrowded Lassen National Park for another four days of hiking, climbing, swimming, and relaxing before one more night of camping on the Truckee River as we made our way back home.

This picture of Lisa and the kids was taken along the Truckee River on our way up to Northern California.

Hannah with the Novak's baby daughter, Zuri. Meeting Zuri was a big reason we chose to make Weaverville part of our summer road trip. She is a delightful little girl and we enjoyed her very much.

The mountain biking around Weaverville is great. Hannah had yet to do much single track and the trails in the Novak's backyard were a perfect place for her to start. She did great making her way down the four or so miles from the Novak's place to Weaverville where we treated ourselves to yummy Italian sodas.

Nothing but good times on this day!

The other reason we chose Weaverville as a destination on this summers trip was so Bob could join Michael and some of his friends for another climb of Mount Shasta. He and the others had a great climb on a perfect day. For more pictures of this outing, CLICK HERE.

Our short class 2 paddle raft trip down the beautiful Trinity River was one of the most enjoyable things we did on our trip. Whenever we went through another rapid Caleb would exclaim, "This is all fun!"

Nothing but smiles from all (except for the dog, but if you could see her tail, it was wagging).

Riding like a champ!

After a wonderful time in Weaverville with the Novak's we headed back to Lassen National Park. Our camping reservations were next to this high mountain lake called Summit Lake. There were a few mosquitoes, but the lake is shallow so it was warm and great for swimming.

Right out of our campground is the trailhead for the 11 mile Summit Lake Loop Hike which passes by a number of beautiful high mountain lakes. The first one is called Echo Lake and is about a 4 mile out and back hike, just perfect for kids.

About ten years ago Lisa and I took the short three mile hike to Bumpass Hell and figured it would be another good hike for the kids. Bumpass Hell is an active geologic hydrothermal basin and quite interesting to see. Here we are at the trailhead getting ready to ignore the hazard sign and trek across snowbanks to get there. Last winter they had heavy snow year and a lot remains in the high country.

Nothing like waking up in the morning to a campfire and warm water on the boil.

Our last full day in Lassen, Hannah and Dad climbed almost to the top of the Lassen Peak (10,457 feet). We weren't allowed to go all the way up to the top because the Park Service is rebuilding the upper reaches of the trail. Nonetheless, we called it a summit.

Another great pastime, kids racing through the campground on their bikes.
