Das Boot (October 5, 2007)

Das Boot is the technical entry section of the famous "Subway" in Zion National Park. We did this canyon with four others who were attending the 2007 American Canyoneering Association Rendezvous. Here I am getting ready to hike in from the Wildcat Trailhead.

Here's Mike Brunson with two of the new friends we met at the Rendezvous. On his left is Armando Almanza and on his right is Amilcar Barbosa. Both Amilcar and Armando are canyoneering guides in Mexico.

There are spectacular views to the south of the Wildcat trailhead looking towards the Great West Canyon.

Pictured here are our other two new friends Bob Sunta and Andy Eastman with Amilcar.

Moving down the many sandstone slabs on our way to the Das Boot entrance.

The Das Boot entry is at the bottom of this canyon.

Armando and myself suited up for the many cold pools found in Das Boot.

Into the water.

I wore a full 7mm wet suit and, for the most part, was glad that I did.

Myself and Mike having fun.

Das Boot is a true subterranean canyon.

Most of Das Boot is like this.

Armando took this picture of Mike and I near the mid section of Das Boot.

We were fortunate that recent rains storms had flushed all of the pot holes leaving them full and clean.

One of the few places we found where you could get out of the water.

Mike giving Andy a friendly little "boot" to push him through a particularly tight section.

Once we finished the Das Boot section of the Subway, Mike and I opted to hike out and not complete the lower section because we'd done it a number of times before. This worked out well because we could shuttle our friends' car down to the Left Fork trailhead so it would be waiting for them when they finished. This is a picture of Mike hiking through the spectacular Zion scenery on our way back to the Wildcat trailhead.
