The Subway (October 2, 2005)

Bob, Mike Brunson, and Jim Germain on approach to the "Subway" from the Wildcat Canyon trailhead in Zion National Park.

Jim Germain enjoying a gorgeous day on Zion slickrock just before the pass that leads to the Subway section of the Left Fork of North Creek.

Getting ready to descend the last steep section before entering the Subway section of the Left Fork of North Creek visible behind Mike and Jim.

The first wonderful portion of the inner canyon.

This canyon deserves it's reputation as one of the most scenic in Zion.

Gorgeous.

This is where the actual "Subway" begins.

Prior to this section there were a couple very cold swims so the wet suit was welcome.

More incredible scenery.

The eroded sandstone taking on a "subway" shape.

The light and the shadows are wonderful here.

One of the most photographed sections of the Subway.

And I'm happy to be here.

Mike leaping over a narrow section just before the only "real" rappel in the Subway.

"The Subway"

Thankful to have the chance to see this place.

Jim Germain -- the only one "tough" enough to do this without a wet suit.

Exiting the Subway one is treated to lovely views like this.

More beautiful cascades over bright, red sandstone terraces.

Towering sandstone walls as we exit the Subway for the scramble out to the Left Fork trailhead.

Dinosaur tracks on fossilized mudstone about 2 miles from the Left Fork trailhead.

A closer view.

Mike on the steep section to the canyon rim and the end to an incredible semi-technical canyoneering trip.
