White Rim: April 11-13, 2007

Part 1

The beginning of a great trip. Kim Kelsey, Bob, myself, and Alex Heindl (photographer) just before
hopping on our bikes near Canyonland's Island in the Sky Visitor Center.

Views from the top. The LaSalle Mountains in the distance and the White Rim Road winding far below.

First off we have to go down the exposed switchbacks of the Shafer Trail -- a steep 5 mile section.
We are glad we have good brakes and that it's not raining!

Alex Heindl on his first mountain bike ride -- the 100 mile White Rim trail!

Our support "SAG" wagon (for riders "sagged" from fatigue): Kim's brand new pickup.

Our first lunch stop. People could bale here if weather conditions were bad. Ours weren't so we press on for a fun time.

Alex, Kim, and Lisa enjoying the view.

Sweet Lisa!

Lisa having a great time.

The views were gorgeous wherever you looked.

Bob and Alex checking out Musselman Arch. This made Lisa a little nervous.

Bob "tacoed" the back wheel of his bike.
Here the guys perform a "miraculous" wheel straightening. Bob was then able to ride the rest of the trip.

The White Rim road was a fun combination of dirt and slick rock that was a blast to ride.

Kim Kelsey riding in the middle of red stone towers.

The road was interesting in places. For example, here we were driving on an overhanging ledge.

Our first nights camp "Airport Camp" at the bas of Airport Tower. For the most part all the camps were very austere but the pit toilets were spotless. Kudos to the caretakers.
