Labyrinth River Trip: May 12 to May 15, 2008

Part 2 -- Register Rock to Mineral Bottom Takeout

Labyrinth Canyon was a pleasant surprise for us. Even though it is total flat water without the thrill of rapids found elsewhere, it is spectacularly scenic and primitive. It also has a lot of interesting history.

Do you think the girls are liking this??

One of the Great Blue Herons we seen on the trip.

Mari and Caleb hanging out again.

After another 18 mile day we arrived at our second camp at about the same time as the day before (river mile 61.4). When we left our previous camp we thought it would be difficult to find another as good, and then we found this one. Not quite as much room as the previous camp but there were even better views and access to a fun side canyon hike.

A morning shot from the cliff above our camp looking back upstream to the small divide where the river draws close to itself before swinging 7 miles around Bowknot Bend. Bowknot Bend is a huge river meander.

The same image as the previous taken about five minutes later.

May 15th and back on the river.

The Potts family with their kids on their first river trip -- how fun!

Our Hannah.

It was so great to have Jim and Mari on this trip with us. They do nothing but make your life better.

The river near mile 58.

Near mile 57 and about five from the takeout.

Doing a little watercolor painting.

Looking up Hell Roaring Canyon on river left.

We made it to the takeout at Mineral Bottom at about noon. Everything's loaded and we're ready to head back. It was a great trip and I think all of us were a little bummed it was over. That said, we were already talking about our next adventure together.

We spent a couple of days with Jim and Mari at their Castle Valley Inn bed and breakfast. They have a beautiful place and I had to take a few pictures of their place and facilities. This is the Anasazi cabin.

This is the picture of the main house.

This is their Hovenweep Bungalow.

One of the things we did was check out the dinosaur tracks that aren't too far from Jim and Mari's place at the base of the La Sal mountains off the La Sal Mountain Loop Road. Between Hannah and Caleb is the track of an Alosauros permanently preserved in a hardened lava flow.

The Colorado River along Route 128 between Castle Valley and Moab Utah. Looking forward to this trip being the first of many!
