The long, dusty 14 mile approach road to the trailhead. Montgomery (13,441 feet) and Boundary (13,145 feet) Peaks are in the background.

Our comfortable camp the night before the climb

The 5 a.m. sunrise on the 3-4 mile walk to the snow

Because Boundary is more of a hike/scree slog than a climb, we wanted to do it in late spring when there was still snow in the gullies to crampon up. For that reason it's included on our Mountaineering page.

As it turned out there was still plenty of snow in the arid White Mountains

Moving up the lower sections was quite a bit easier on snow than the scree later on in the year

Rick Loop and Jim Germain moving up

About two thirds of the way up the gullies became very icy with long runouts so we moved onto the open ridges

Rick and Jim on Boundary's summit

It was a beautiful, clear Spring day with huge views of the Sierras

Montgomery Peak to the south

By 1 p.m. the sun had softened the snow making for a fun glisade down the steeper slopes
