Kayaking Black Canyon (November 15, 2014)

Originally we had scheduled our annual kayak trip for November 1st, but because of high winds we had to push it to the 15th. There were quite a number of paddlers who had planned on joining us, but because of scheduling conflicts couldn't make it. In the end it was just our family and good friend Frank Nason. It turned out to be the right move as the 1st was very windy and the 15th a beautiful fall day to be on the Colorado.

Looking back at the put-in, the new Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, and Hoover Dam.

Hannah ready to go paddling down the river.

Lisa and Caleb paddling together. Caleb and Hannah have turned out to be great paddlers. What a difference a couple of years makes.

One of the many Desert Bighorn sheep that populate this part of the Mojave Desert.

Looking upstream from the mouth of Boy Scout Canyon. Having such a small group on this years trip allowed us to stop and do more exploring than we had been able to do in the past.

Hannah and Dad's silhouette shadows on the opposite canyon wall.

Hannah is such an outdoor girl and a pleasure to be with.

During our noon break, Caleb found a place to sleep...

...and you can see from this photo that he practices the family motto: "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room!"

Hannah's photo of the rushing hot spring water flowing down Boy Scout Canyon.

About four miles from the take out at Willow Beach is Emerald Cave.
This is view from inside the cave out into the Colorado river.

Our good friend Frank Nason.

Lisa, Hannah and Christy paddling into Emerald Cave.

It is a magical place.

Frank looking upstream from what's left of the gaugemaster's quarters. This foundation is just one of the many remnants left behind from the Hoover Dam construction days when understanding river levels and fluctuations was really important.

The view to the west from the gaugemaster's quarters.

The trail, catwalks, cable car, and gauging station that the gaugemaster used every day can be seen in this picture.

Our boats.

Worn out after a big day of fresh air, sun and plenty of exercise. This is a good tired...
