Spry Canyon (November 10, 2013)

After a great day in Yankee Doodle with the whole family, Bob took our friends Paul and Summer Mudd for a trip through Spry Canyon in Zion National Park. Spry is one of our favorite canyons, but a bit too technical for the kids yet. Paul and Summer are climbers so Spry was a great second introduction to canyoneering for them.

Bob and Paul making the slickrock approach to the pass between the East Temple and Deertrap Mountain that leads to the head of Spry Canyon.

Summer and Paul taking a break on the approach to the pass above them.

Petroglyphs along the approach trail (N37° 13' 35", W112° 56' 34").

One of the goofy raps in Spry.

Always kind of enjoy this anchor as it's a bit committing leaning out over the gap to set up the rap.

The view up to the exposed anchor in the previous picture.

A beautiful 90 foot rappel into a dark and narrow slot. This is one of the best raps in Spry.

Every time I go through Spry I think about how difficult it would be to negotiate this rock that is almost a perfect canyon plug if it weren't for the small gap on the right.

An example of some of the nasty rope grooves found in the lower sections of Spry.

Enjoying a spot of sun on a cool November day.

A great day in a great place with great friends!
