Flume Trail: September 7, 2015

One of the first things we wanted to do after moving to Carson City is take advantage of the amazing mountain bike opportunities around Lake Tahoe. Of course one of the first rides we wanted to take was the famous Flume Trail. It truly is an amazing ride and lives up to it's reputation.

Before we made the ride, however, we needed to get Caleb a new bike because he was quickly outgrowing his 24 inch kids bike. As we've found in a number of cases, Carson has many great stores including Bike Habitat, a top notch bike shop less than a mile from our house. There we picked up great 27.5 Giant Talon that should last him a number of years. It looks a bit big for him now, but the way he's growing that soon won't be the case.

The trail is roughly 15 miles long, the first five of which are fairly strenuous climbing the 1,200 feet from Spooner Lake to Marlette Lake. From there it's flat and spectacular as the trail follows the route of the wooden flume used in the 1800's to transport timber from the High Sierra.

Here the family is pictured taking a break before heading down the really fun and scenic part of this ride. Everyone was quite happy to be past the climbing section.

The remaining nine miles before dropping into Incline Village was filled with amazing views like this.

Sand Harbor on Lake Tahoe - roughly 1,600 feet below us.

This is an amazing ride and one we will be doing again. We're so glad to live only 20 minutes from this kind of fun!
